Best of Rest

New:Upcoming Award 1

I'm not sure what the "upcoming award" means, but perhaps it would be nice to have three places, not just one ultimate winner for the category, just like last year. That will help in furthering our goal - highlighting as many blogs as possible.

I know there were some specific suggestions in the comments, and I hope, after taking a look at this list, you'll keep them coming!

Comments on "Proposed Categories"

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (9:40 AM) :

Sounds good...

But if the goal is to highlight as many blogs as possible, I think you must better define the criteria for qualifying for each category...

Then have bloggers register for their respective category(ies), and have the powers that be certify the blogs (almost like a Jblogsphere association)...

Shmuel

PS - Best New Blog 2006 could have an Upcoming Award, too, which could be for blogs that were formed in the latter half of 2006.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:13 PM) :

How does someone get the award for upcoming .. is it a seperate vote IN that category? I like it, but just curious how we work it.

Also I'm wondering, since we have so many categories now, should we do away with someone being over-nominated? Maybe we should impose a two category limit on nominations per blog.

Like by ebay, most people select a catrgory and then one sub-category. It seems like part of the mess comes when a blog like let's say ... Jewlicious ... gets noinated for best designed, best israel culture, best humor, best overall, best group ...

A person should be able to fit thier blog into two categories no? Maybe three? But some sort of limit, anyone else agree?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:07 PM) :

What about Jewish anti-Israel blogs?
What about Jewish blogs whose author has a denominational affiliation that's not one of the big three? What about all the ex-frummie and questioning-frummie blogs?

...Not like I give a damn about your lame award show. All the big bloggers will nominate each other and request votes from their massive readerships, and the little blogs will barely get recognized; causing the Jblogothingie to become even more of a clique than it already is.

Blogger Jewish Atheist said ... (7:35 PM) :

Best Secular Jewish blog.

Best ex-Orthodox Blog.

Best Orthodox Questioning/Skeptical Blog.

Best liberal political blog.

Best conservative political blog.

Best blog by a pulpit Rabbi.

Blogger Jewish Atheist said ... (8:26 PM) :

After conversing with a friend, I think "Blog by a former Orthodox person" might be better than "ex-Orthodox."

Also, best BT blog.

Blogger Ezzie said ... (9:04 PM) :

I like JA's suggestions, by and large. There might be an overlap between "former Orthodox" and "skeptical", as the FO are all skeptical. The skeptical would include all of them AND the skeptical who are Orthodox.

As for the right-left splits... I think that should only be split in terms of political blogs, not other categories. The same with a lot of the other splits - they should only apply as general categories of their own, we shouldn't divide each category into a bunch of subcategories. I *do* like the 1st/2nd/3rd place for "new" blogs in each category, though.

Not sure I love all the categories, but I'd need more time to look at them...

Blogger Irina Tsukerman said ... (10:48 PM) :

Not sure I like the idea of overnominations for "big" blogs... Maybe we should have a few more separate mega-blog categories?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:26 AM) :

Is nominating going to be limited to the "big boys"? Or to the ones who are over 30?

I hope nobody nominates me for Best Ex-Orthodox award.

Blogger Irina Tsukerman said ... (8:08 AM) :

Sholom: No, absolutely not. It's limited to whoever qualifies for the proposed categories. I think it's a good idea to have specific descriptions of the awards, so that there wouldn't be any misunderstandings, as you mentioned.

Blogger Baleboosteh said ... (12:18 PM) :

I second Chaim's idea of a two or three category limit on nominations per blog - very good idea!

I also think that some categories for the mega blogs is a good idea too or else noone else (with 'smaller' blogs) will ever have a chance of winning an award if they come up against a 'mega blog'.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (2:24 PM) :

But how do you define who is a mega blog? How do you define who is Ex-Orthodox? Basically, whoever's in charge, needs to take charge and come up with criteria.

In terms of overnomination: if this were the 2nd grade, I'd say, "Yeah, you can only be nominated for 2-3 awards." But since we've all long passed that grade (I hope), I think it's rather childish to put a cap on this - even if it'll make small fish (like myself) not win. On the flipside, though, you could put a big fish/little fish award for each category. Which brings me back to my first question: how do you define who is a mega blog?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:54 PM) :

Shmuel, we already said on another thread that we could determine the size of a blog based on the TLB Rankings which do a great job of tracking these types of things.

We just need to finish adding all the URL's from Jrants to the list of 150+ blogs already there.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (8:05 PM) :

I know that there are a lot of blogs out there, of a lot of different types. And of course, it's great to give recognition, so you want to have a lot of categories...

But this is too many categories...

Even without JA's new suggested categories (many of which I strongly agree need to be added), you're sitting at roughly ~140 awards right now. That's overkill. Some consolidation might be in order.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (10:10 PM) :

Thanks Chaim... btw, do you know how to get in touch with JRants? I need to change the name of my blog on their site.

I agree with It that ~140 awards is way too much.

Bagel Blogger says, "Too many entries in one award area makes it too hard to actually view all blogs and make a sound decision." Well, I suggest then that a panel of judges make a short list so that no category has more than 5-10 blogs to choose from.

Regards,

Shmuel

Bagel Blogger: Sure, that can be done... There's an e-mail discussion group, going on, though... If you want an invite you can email Akiva from Mystical Path... That's where we plan to continue discussion, and have set up several groups to deal with various aspects of organizing the situation.

Re: Limiting awards. I'm not sure it's such a great idea, because there are blogs which are wonderful in many respects, and it would be a bit unfair to not allow them to be nominated in multiple categories. I think putting caps on nominations would make the whole thing just a little too artificial.

Re: Sponsors. The Israeli Consulate in US has organized IsRealli, the official Israeli blog... Perhaps they'd be interested in linking to this/sponsoring...

Muse: Good point... And what about all thsoe individuals, who aren't easily labelled...

Blogger trn said ... (9:51 AM) :

I don't think we should have ANY awards. Why have a competition? People hate the campaigning process anyway.

I have a suggestion for what I think is a better approach.

The goal is to bring awareness to Jewish blogs, right? The goal is to highlight interesting Jewish blogs, much like the roundups and carnivals do, yes? But don't we want to include as many blogs as possible?

So first, make a HUGE list of ALL the J-blogs. Make that available immediately. Think of it as a giant blogroll. I think I even saw one somewhere once.

Then, index the list; index it in a professional manner, as one who works doing professional indexing would do for a book. This then would highlight all the blogs by the multitude of subjects covered.

Have the indexing cross-reference back to the list. So, maybe I would find a blog listed under, for instance, "Bereaved Parents." But that same blog would be listed under, let's say, "Divrei Torah," "Fertility Issues," "Pop Culture: Music: 70s," "Jewish Community Life: Baltimore," "Brain Teasers," "Size: Medium," "Year Began: 2003," and "On Indefinite Hiatus."

Then, back in the large list, those categories would be listed after the name of the blog.

Also, this way, we don't have a problem with over-nominating. Blogs can instead be indexed to many, many categories.

And with indexing to categories, "labeling" is less problematic. A multi-faceted blog doesn't get reduced down to "Reform Jewish Blog" just because the author happens to be Reform. Some authors are observant but don't state movement affiliation and are writing popular blogs and appreciated comments on other blogs about many interesting topics but not largely issues of ritual observance anyway. There's no reason to separate them out based on one category, when otherwise they are an integral part of the community.

Blogs can be indexed to categories about content -- "Halakhah: Modern Orthodox," "Reconstructionist Judaism, Ideology." Even categories that would seem to be about who the author is can be presented more as description of the content or purpose of the blog rather than labeling of the author -- "Rabbinical: Conservative," "Formerly Observant Orthodox Jews, Issues of" -- though if who the author is is quite relevant, this is less of a problem.

What do people think?

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:07 PM) :

I agree that there are too many categories, but I'd still like to suggest a Jewish family life category.

I think that trn has a great idea--if someone sets it up technically I would be willing to help. Oh, and thanks to whoever linked to the interviews on the main page.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (5:52 PM) :

TRN: There are many such lists. Many people enjoy competition in addition to all that.

Mother in Israel: Good idea, but at the same time, perhaps it could simply be part of the personal log category... seems to fit right in there...

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (7:24 PM) :

Irina--t was responding to the student life category. If you have that you should have one for singles, one for families, etc.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (3:58 AM) :

Mother in Israel: OK... I guess I misunderstood. By "singles" do you mean dating-type blogs?

Blogger westbankmama said ... (10:10 AM) :

I think it is a good idea to limit the number of categories in which each blog can compete - three sounds more than fair. What we really want is to give every blog a chance to attract more readers - and if one blog is in too many categories it takes away from the others. I do think that it is a good idea to have a lot of categories, though. The Jewish blogosphere is a reflection of the Jews themselves - lots of different types.

Anonymous Anonymous said ... (12:50 PM) :

Irina--Yes.

Blogger Jameel @ The Muqata said ... (5:07 PM) :

Sponsored Prizes?

I could offer Waffle Breakfasts at the Muqata :)

Blogger mother in israel said ... (1:32 PM) :

Irina, that anon was me.

Blogger Shmuel @ Go Golan said ... (1:45 PM) :

I think TRN makes a great suggestion. I know there's JRants, but categorizing blogs would be a welcoming innovation to the world of Jewish Blogging - people want to see what they like, not the newest blog post. I'd like to take one step further by suggesting a JBlogger Association that would centralize our efforts to one "official" (albeit self-proclaimed) blogging association.

Blogger Irina Tsukerman said ... (7:08 PM) :

Shmuel: But what about miscellaneous blogs, or blogs, which can easily belong to several categories? Wouldn't that only create confusion?

Blogger mother in israel said ... (12:36 PM) :

There are so many blogs now that it's hard to find the ones you want. There wouldn't be any problem in having one blog fit into a few categories.
